Background:

Like Tokaki and Subaru, Tatara is also a Byakko seishi. Although he seems to be a young man, he's actually extremely old (Subaru's magic halted his body's aging).

The Seiryuu people capture him, trying to get him to give them the Byakko Shinzaho. However, Tatara is extremely intelligent, and he can tell that the Genbu Shinzaho in Seiryuu's possession was stolen from Miaka. Therefore, he won't give his Shinzaho up to anyone but her.

Now there's a special reason for his determination other than his loyalty as a Byakko seishi to Byakko no Miko. Oosugi Suzuno, the Byakko no Miko, was his lover, but when they summoned Byakko and wished to remain together, Byakko told them that that was the one wish he could not grant. So they had to part - Suzuno went back to her own world, married, and had children. Tatara didn't care, he said that as long as she was happy, even though she had a whole new life without him, he would be happy too. But she never forgot Tatara. In the anime, when he died (he had been removed from the Temple of Byakko so Subaru's spell was undone. Then he expended the rest of his energy fighting Miboshi to get the Shinzaho back), Suzuno, who was a very old woman in Miaka's world, also dies at the same moment. Keisuke and Tetsuya witness her death, but are even more shocked by the fact that Tatara's spirit has come for her. He waits for her outside her home, and she appears as a ghostly young girl and runs into his arms. So after 90+ years, they were able to be together again.

Hmmmmm..... let's see, He controls plants, he's extremely intelligent and has long hair..... he reminds me sooo much of Kurama. And he's story is so touching. (see, I'm not that evil - - I mean violent)
